Festival Director’s Welcome
Kiaora and Welcome to Body 2010
This year's festival promises to be another jam packed
two weeks of workshops, performance, films and
events to get the body moving and keep the dancing
spirits alive during the winter nights.
We kick off with
our launch event and our successfully trialled concept
'Speed Dancing'. Think speed dating with dance.
Our performance programme is extensive again with the second season of local contemporary company
'Southern Lights Dance Company' which was so well received last year. We are delighted to welcome Lado
Ciego from Argentina with a contemporary Tango show Peso Medio and Atamira Dance company bring
their work Taonga down to the festival. We also feature works from the New Zealand School of Dance as well
as local companies including Jolt, A Different Light, Free Theatre, Liminal, Tablo and many more besides.
With over 50 workshops on offer there is something for everyone.
Finally I would like to make a special thanks to my board for standing by me and supporting me through the last couple of years as we have expanded
the activities of our trust. Special thanks to the Christchurch City Council who have been with us since the beginning and are allowing us to keep growing and building this annual celebration of dance both now and
into the future. See you on the dance floor.
From the Chair
Kia ora koutou and welcome. As you will see on the following pages, this year's festival delivers the richness and diversity the Christchurch dance public has come to expect from the Body.
Once again we all have the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the polished efforts of others or to get in there and give it a go at one of the many workshops. We are delighted at the inclusion of a second season by local contemporary dance company Southern Lights – an exciting follow-on from the critical acclaim of the premiere season last year and this year the beginning of a small national tour. It is encouraging for the future of local professional dance that Creative New Zealand has recognised the worth of this project.
For the past nine years, the Dance and Physical Theatre Trust has been the umbrella organisation under which this festival operates. We are all indebted to Artistic Director Adam Hayward for his ability and forethought in sustaining and growing the festival over this period and as always are impressed by the programme Adam has assembled. Our thanks go to those at all levels – staff, sponsors, supporters – who continue to make the festival such a calendar highlight.
