About the Festival
(Festival Director’s Welcome)
In a year that has presented many challenges it is heartening to be able to offer a vast array of opportunities to put your dancing shoes on and experience the 15 days that are Body Festival 2009..
Earlier this year we received a grant from Creative New Zealand to help support the formation of a new ‘repertory’ contemporary dance company and the festival sees the world premiere and debut season of Southern Lights Dance Company, featuring six of our country’s leading dancers and choreography by New Zealanders Shona McCullagh and Fleur de Thier and, with the support of the Christchurch Arts Centre’s Artist in Residence programme, American choreographer Zöe Scofield.
Building on the huge success of last year’s launch we’re at it again with an attempt at the world’s longest line dance, so come join us in Victoria Square on the 25th September and help us kick things off with a ‘Slide’
As always the community have a go workshops programme is hugely important to us and for this year we’re back in the foyer of the Christchurch Art Gallery with fifteen workshops scheduled over the three weekends of the festival alongside a huge array of independent workshops being offered all over the city.
Our performance programme is also strong with works by companies including: Java Dance, Okareka Dance Company, Jolt, A Different Light, Hagley Dance Company, and many more besides.
We are also delighted to be partnering with Dance Sport Canterbury to present the inaugural ‘Body Dance Sport Championships’. Showcasing the competitive dance side of things best illustrated in ‘Dancing With The Stars’, so come check out how the professionals do it at the Town Hall on the 10th October.
Finally, I am once again especially grateful to my board and staff for their ongoing support and guidance in all of our activities but especially the faith they have in this festival and without their words of encouragement and the support of our key funder the Christchurch City Council, we wouldn’t be able to present such a jam packed festival to you this year.

From the Board
Kia ora koutou.
As Chairperson of the Board of the Dance and Physical Theatre Trust it is my privilege on behalf of the Board, to welcome you to this year's Body Festival programme.
Festival Director Adam Hayward has once again worked his magic to put together a broad variety of workshops and performances that reflect the interests of you; the Christchurch public. The level of participation and support for last year's Festival prove that Christchurch aspires to be a healthy and vibrant community that embraces dance as both an enjoyable and increasingly popular form of physical activity.
If - like me - you've participated in the Body Festival in the past, I'm sure that as usual you'll be excited by what you find on offer this year.
If you're new to the Festival - Welcome! The Body Festival gives you the chance to enjoy a stunning array of leading local, national and international dance and physical theatre performance. In addition, I would encourage you to take this opportunity to participate in at least one of the huge variety of workshops on offer. Shake off the winter cobwebs and find out just how much fun dance can be.
One of the most dramatic additions to the 2009 Body Festival is the creation (with the support of Creative New Zealand) of a new contemporary dance company: Southern Lights Dance Company. The Board view this as an exciting way to support professional dance (and dancers) here in Christchurch and dearly hope this will be the first of many exciting programmes to be presented by the company.
Being new to the role of Chair, I have been slightly in awe of the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to put such a dynamic, diverse and professional programme as this in place. I look forward to enjoying many of the Festival events with you and encourage everyone to utilise and support the South Island Dance Network as a year-round source for dance information.
